Flight Category Calculator

Determine VFR, MVFR, IFR, or LIFR using ceiling and visibility. This free aviation weather calculator helps pilots quickly classify weather conditions for planning and awareness.

Calculate Flight Category

Enter ceiling in feet AGL and visibility in statute miles. The calculator will return the most restrictive flight category.

VFR / IFR Category Calculator

How It Works

VFR:
Ceiling greater than 3,000 ft and visibility greater than 5 SM
MVFR:
Ceiling 1,000 to 3,000 ft and or visibility 3 to 5 SM
IFR:
Ceiling 500 to below 1,000 ft and or visibility 1 to below 3 SM
LIFR:
Ceiling below 500 ft and or visibility below 1 SM

The most restrictive condition controls the reported flight category.

What Is a Flight Category?

Flight category is a weather classification based on ceiling and visibility. It helps pilots quickly understand whether conditions are visual or instrument in nature.

Common categories used in aviation weather reporting are VFR, MVFR, IFR, and LIFR. These categories are especially helpful for preflight planning, briefing interpretation, and airport weather awareness.

Flight Category FAQ

What determines the flight category?

Ceiling and visibility determine the category, and whichever one is more restrictive controls the result.

Can good visibility still be IFR?

Yes. A low ceiling alone can make conditions IFR even if visibility is relatively good.

Can poor visibility make conditions IFR even with a high ceiling?

Yes. Visibility alone can reduce the category to IFR or LIFR even if the ceiling is much higher.

Is this the same as legal VFR minimums?

No. Flight categories are weather reporting classifications. Legal operating minimums depend on airspace, altitude, operation type, and regulations.
